Autism has been in the news a lot of late and to be quite honest, the recent statistics scare the hell out of me. Between 2000 and 2005, diagnosed cases of autism grew by more than 100%. I'm sure much of this is accounted for by better screening practises and autism's prevalence; however, it is a sobering statistic. What's really important to acknowledge is despite the growing media coverage of autism, there is a serious lack of support services for affected families. Until recently, I knew next to nothing about autism, then a former colleague of mine mentioned his son is autistic. This conversation took place while MojoMommy was pregnant with Mojo, so of course my ears perked up and I've been reading ever since.
From everything I, and we as a society, have learned, we still have no idea what causes autism, let alone what could cure it. As fellow parents, I encourage you to read all you can about it, be involved where you can and contribute if you can. Above all, let's not be ignorant any more. Here are a few links to get you started: Autism Speaks: http://www.autismspeaks.org Walk For Autism: http://www.walknowforautism.org The former colleague of mine mentioned above, will be participating in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, Half-Marathon and 5k Run / Walk on September 28, 2008.
