What to Pack On many vacations past, I packed almost every item in my wardrobe on the off chance that I would actually wear 20 outfits in six days. In addition to clothing there were the must have hair and make-up kits, and shoes for each ensemble which required a separate suitcase all their own. How things have changed….the romantic vacations for two have become the clichéd family vacations of three.
I will admit that I was very excited about taking my MoJo on his first airplane and letting him frolic in the ocean. As the time drew near I wondered how to pack for a casual, simple holiday for the three of us? Do I pack only a few items and plan to purchase more when I’m there; or do I pack everything so that I’m prepared for almost any situation? You can probably hazard a guess as to which option I chose. I packed almost every item of summer clothing MoJo owns--multiple bathing suits, probably two dozen onesies, all of his jeans, cargo pants, shorts and pajamas. Have I mention that the weather on Hilton Head Island stayed in the 90s our entire time there? I could have left the jeans and cargos at home. We were fortunate enough that on this holiday we stayed with family friends in a small vacation home that included a full kitchen and a washer & dryer. Moms & Dads you know what this means…. you can do laundry as often as you choose and junior won’t throw a tantrum when his favourite t-shirt can’t be worn again as it’s covered in ice cream! Now that I have some experience, I can’t suggest strongly enough that you make use of the laundry facilities wherever you stay. This is how I should have packed: MoJo: Clothing 5 onsies 5 long-sleeve tops (good for air conditioned stores/restaurants/airplanes) 5 pairs of shorts 5 pairs of socks 2 pairs of long pants 2 pairs of Pjs 1 lightweight jacket 1 pair sandals (wet/dry is recommended) 1 pair sneakers 1 towel 1 swimsuit 1 Personal Floatation Device **very important if you will be near water** MoJo: Food 3 Bottles (they can be washed) 1 Thermos 1-2 days worth of pre-packaged food (Heinz, Gerber etc) This is essential as air travel can have long unexpected delays. Snacks (non-sticky, low in sugar/salt, and easily dispensed) This list works well if you plan to do laundry. If that is not possible, I'd suggest doubling up so you're covered for the week.
We survived our first family vacation, in South Carolina on Hilton Head Island. We had an awesome time and we are excited to visit again before too long. Stay Tuned for Part 2 of Family Vacations...The Joy of Flying.
