Planes, Automobiles....and the Family Vacation

As I wrote in Part 1 of this article, we took our first family vacation in Hilton Head Island, SC. With the exception of a train, we utilized all other modes of transportation. When planning a trip, whether to Grandma's place a couple hours away, or to a different province, maybe to the USA or if you're really fortunate to an exotic locale in Europe, Asia or scores of other great destinations, keep one very important point in mind. You are travelling as a family and the pint-sized member is in charge! Do not for a moment delude yourself and think that this is your trip. You are the, caretaker, cook, laundress, and bank. Ok, it's not really that bad if you put some thought into planning your family holiday.

Plane

If you are flying, especially if any part of your flight will be over USA air space, you must read and follow this articles’ suggestions. Failure to do so will result in you losing some of your possessions and needless hassle with airport security. In addition, if you are flying you need to check before hand to see what your baggage allowances are. Typically, it is one checked item, one carry-on item per person and one personal item (a handbag). Personally, I brought a very large diaper bag and stuffed my purse inside. If your child is at that in between age where a stroller is sometimes needed the airlines are very accommodating. They will let you bring it right up to the boarding gate and then they will tuck it away for the flight and return it at the end.

Automobile

Once we arrived in South Carolina, we needed a vehicle for the duration of our trip. It is very easy and strongly suggested to pre-book a rental vehicle on-line in advance of your actual arrival. This way you avoid some disappointment and save some cash. As we were travelling with MoJo we required a car seat for his safety. Ask when you are booking your car as some rental companies charge a daily rate, while others have a flat rate. It is great to know that many companies are beginning to provide products andr solution for the vacationing family. Oh, one final note…get a map of the area and ask for directions!

Last Word….

Travelling with children need not be a nightmare; following are a few pointers for your consideration:·          set you expectations, know your child’s temperament and accept it (vacation time is not for denial or miracles)

    ·          have lots of water and nutritious snacks within easy reach (avoid sugary snacks and pop)

    ·          have a small selection of activities to occupy them (choose quiet ones for the plane)

    ·          book connecting flights with enough time in between, so you’re not dashing from one end to the other

    ·          pack as efficiently as possible (read this Transportation Security Administration document prior to packing)

    ·          dress for your final destination, try to layer clothing or plan to change during a stop-over

    ·          stick to what is familiar-don’t change essentials like bottles, pacifier, formula, diapers etc…

    ·          if your child tends to be queasy during travel, speak to their doctor about possible medication; this will keep everyone happy!

    ·          keep all travel documents in one place and designate one parent to be responsible for tickets. boarding passes, and speaking with the security agents

    ·          modern airports are blessed with many washroom and family washrooms…make use of them, often!

    ·          leave a copy of your travel itinerary with a relative or trusted friend in case of emergency

    ·          purchase travel insurance for all individuals on the trip—it may seem like a waste, but it will save you time and money if junior is ill

As I stated earlier, these are just some of my lessons learned during the last 17 months with Mojo, I hope it will be useful to some of you as you plan your family getaways for the Christmas season.
